East Meets Africa
Embassy of Japan presents East Meets Africa: Art Exhibition Japanese Festival for Centennial Celebrations
How many people know that Jan van Riebeeck was stationed in Japan before he became Commander of the Cape in 1652. How many have ever heard of an African with a Japanese name 'Yasuke', who fought bravely in battle for a legendary Japanese feudal lord in 16th Century? Or a Chinese admiral Zheng He, who led an enormous fleet to East Africa in 15th century? Inspired by these fascinating, albeit sporadic, encounters over centuries between East Asia and Africa in general, and Japan and South Africa in particular, Masako Osada presents East Meets Africa, a celebration of cultural diversity universality and accompanied by a beautiful Japanese flower exhibition. w: www.osada.co.za.
