AUSTRALOPITHECUS SEDIBA
RE-EXPLORING HUMAN ORIGINS - new species of great ape (family Hominidae) described from fossils discovered by University of Witwatersrand palaeo-anthropologist, Professor Lee Berger, and his son Matthew.
Fossils were located in nearly 2-million-year-old deposits in “Cradle of Humankind” World Heritage Site in Gauteng. Ancient, small-brained, long-armed hominids are thought to be a link between australopithecine fossils like “Mrs Ples”, and the most ancient representatives of the genus Homo to which we Homo sapiens now belong. Pictured here Prof. Lee Berger with original fossil skull of juvenile male of Australopithecus sediba. Photographs by Hamish Robertson. Hours : Open daily 10:00-17:00. Closed Workers Day and Christmas Day Iziko South African Museum, 25 Queen Victoria Str, Gardens, Cape Town |
BAROQUE MEETS MODERN
Reconfiguration of Iziko Michaelis Collection of Dutch and Flemish paintings. Old Town House has been re-hung to resemble the way in which pictures were hung in Dutch homes in the 1600s. Modern abstractions have also been inserted into this re-hang, reminding us that mercantile democratic Dutch of the 17th century were among first active dealers and collectors who established broader precedent of art collector and art market as we know it today.
